Report

Overview

A Report in WikiELN is the primary workspace where files are uploaded, displayed, and, if compatible, read and edited directly in the browser. Reports are flexible and customizable, allowing you to organize your data in a way that best fits your project’s needs.

Creating a Report

Permissions Required

To create a report, a user must have Write permissions or higher within the group.

Options for Creating a Report

There are three ways to create a report in WikiELN:

  1. Linked Report:
  • A report can be linked from a parent group.
  • Linked reports are read-only in the child group, meaning that any changes to the parent report will be automatically reflected in the linked report, but the child group cannot edit it.
  • This option is ideal when you need to maintain consistency across groups or ensure that specific data remains unaltered.
  1. Copied Report:
  • You can copy an existing report, creating a duplicate that can be fully edited.
  • A copied report allows users with Write permissions to modify the content and files within it.
  • When a report is copied, all files within the original report are also copied, allowing for independent edits without affecting the original.
  1. Fresh Report:
  • Start from scratch with a blank report.
  • Customize the report with your own tiles and upload files as needed.

Report Structure

Tiles

Reports in WikiELN are composed of Tiles. Each tile can contain a different type of content, allowing for a highly flexible and organized layout.

Types of Tiles

  • Document Tile (.docx):
  • Display and edit Microsoft Word documents directly in the browser.
  • Spreadsheet Tile (.xlsx):
  • Display and edit Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.
  • PDF Tile:
  • View PDF documents within the report.
  • Image Tile:
  • Display image files, including most common formats (e.g., .png, .jpeg).
  • Markdown Tile:
  • For text formatted in Markdown, ideal for creating Wikis
  • Folder Tile:
  • Store and organize other file types that are not directly viewable or editable in the browser.

File Management in Reports

  • Files uploaded to a report are owned by the group that owns the report.
  • Each file type that can be edited in the browser (e.g., .docx, .xlsx) is stored in its respective tile, making it easy to find and work with specific content.
  • Other file types that are not compatible with in-browser editing can be stored in the Folder Tile for easy access and management.

Conclusion

Reports are a central feature of WikiELN, offering a versatile space for organizing and managing your project’s files. Whether you’re linking, copying, or starting fresh, reports provide the tools you need to collaborate effectively and keep your data well-structured.
